1. Christmas is coming
The festive season is not very far away. For many of my readers this means traditional Christmas time with cold frosty weather and even snow and that just perfect setting for Father Christmas to arrive in.
To those people I say think of us here in South Africa.
Christmas means high temperatures, mostly sunny skies and barbecues on the beach or in the bush. Most of us leave our ponds behind, head for the coast or countryside because it is also summer holiday time ... yes mid-summer.
I will squeeze in one more gazette hopefully before I also hit the road and drive 10 hours down to a most beautiful part of South Africa called Kenton On Sea
For those people leaving their ponds behind my best bit of advice is DO NOT LET anyone feed your fish or if you do prepare the quantities in advance in small plastic bags and give strict instructions as to when the food should be fed (maybe every 2 or 3 days). What you do not want to do is give carte blanche to the neighbour by saying "will you please feed my fish" and hand over a 5 lb bag of fish food. They will find it so much fun they will overfeed them and possibly create major biofilter problems ... and God forbid if the neighbour's kids get their hands on this "cookie jar" along with access to the pond.
If you have not changed your UV lamp for the last 12 months then do it now before holidaying. It's also a good idea to get rid of any accumulated sludge in the bottom of the biofilter.

I have just created an interactive Pond Pump Selector web page that allows most people to immediately specify easily and correctly (as well as cost ... both purchase price and running costs) the pond pump that suits their waterfall situation. This is normally a complicated specification I have now made very easy on line.
For trying out this new web page ( I want to know if it works essentially ... I have tested and it does work on my computer) I will give 25% discount off the cost you see by trying the pump selector out. In other words if your use of the calculator shows you need the 1800L pond pump it will also show you the price of R649 incl VAT for this pump. The 25% discount means you will be able to buy it for R486.75 incl VAT.
Important Note
This discount only applies to those who try the calculator, specify the pump through it and then decide to buy their selected pump. So that we know you have done this you will need the following secret code name when you talk to Brenda or Pauline in our office.

2. My calculators now interactive ... please try them out
Something I have wanted to do for some time but did not know how until recently was to place some of my calculators on my web sites in an interactive form ... ie anyone could use them without downloading the calculators.
You can imagine how pleased with myself I was when I achieved this and found hey presto they worked. Please go here and try them out .... interactive calculators or click the individual links below.
Please note however a few of you may not be able to use them because you need IE version 4.1 at least (most people do have this) and you must have Microsoft Excel installed on your computer. Here are the four calculators you can try out on line
