1. Selecting Pond and Waterfall Pumps .. made easy here
Few retailers are able to correctly specify the right pond and waterfall pump ... the presence of a waterfall complicates the decision significantly. So choose the right pond and waterfall pump with confidence here and save money and disappointment. There two tables to choose from ... 1) no waterfall required and 2) waterfall is required

There are hundreds of makes and models of pond and waterfall pumps ... so many it is confusing and irritating trying to find the right one.
On the matter of cost do take note of the operating cost .... normally far more important than the original cost and if you ever compare pumps ALWAYS take this electricity cost into account. In South Africa work out the daily running cost by multiplying the Watts consumed (look at box or silver label on end of the actual pump body) by the factor 2.628 and this will give you Rands per year it costs you to run that pump. If you have a pool pump or a sump pump (those upright pumps, with suction at bottom) you may get a shock. If your pump is rated in kiloWatts then to get Watts multiply by 1,000.
Here's an example .... pump is rated at 100 watts (or 0.1 kiloWatt) then annual electricity cost at 30 c per unit is R262.80. If pump is rated at 30 watts then annual cost is only R78.84.
2. Selecting Pond Plants
It is very difficult to find a summary of pond plants. It is even more difficult to find out in a table form what colour (if any) the flower is and whether they like sun or shade. Finding size when fully grown is also a challenge .... so I have done the hard work for you. Print this page out and send to your friends as well.
If you want to buy water plants then click here and enter water plants into the search box that comes up and don't forget Free Water Lilies and Aquatics book ... see below.
PLEASE NOTE TO REDUCE FILE SIZE FOR YOUR EMAIL DOWNLOAD TABLE BELOW IN THIS GAZETTE HAS BEEN ABBREVIATED SIGNIFICANTLY ... TO SEE FULL TABLE Click here and be patient ... it is large file

3. The Nexus and The Answer ... William Kelly's article The main benefits of the Nexus and the Answer technologies are numerous. In a nutshell though, they take the latest understanding of filtration and bio film theory and apply it to Koi keeping filtration equipment right from the design stage to implementation. These products are not modifications of other products designed for different purposes (such as sand filters), which means that every rand spent on them goes directly into the task at hand ... maintaining optimum water quality! Mother Nature runs her chemical plants in an ideal steady state process. At all times, everything is in balance and disturbances to the balance are quickly damped out. The Answer and Nexus help your pond achieve the same desirable steady state operation more closely than any other product. The performance of the Nexus, particularly in combination with the Answer, is vastly superior to anything available on the South African market today. Depending on what you have as a bio filter at the moment the Nexus can be up to 1 000% more efficient at removing wastes. The speed at which wastes are obliterated means that Koi are housed in a pond that more closely represents their natural habitat. Note that speed is everything in a Koi pond - even a very small inefficient bio filter will completely remove ammonia/ammonium wastes, eventually! The Koi might not be around to see it though. Healthier Koi are more resistant to disease and stresses induced by changing conditions beyond the Koi keepers control. Parameters with the Koi keepers control though, such as feed rates can be enhanced with the Nexus since the filter can handle much larger loads. For instance the Nexus 300 can handle up to 1 kg of Koi (high standards) food a day! This means that you can feed more often, with better growth results. Another substantial benefit is that of low maintenance. This can save you many thousands of rand in your own time costs. Personally, 5 more minutes in bed counts for a lot! All the Nexus requires is a quick 5 second purge once a day, and dare I say it, if you miss a day its unlikely to be the end of the world. This saves time and water and hence money. Once a week, depending on load, a more serious purge may be needed but even then this is no more than opening a valve for a short while. With an Answer fitted, your Kaldnes K1 bio media will not need cleaning nearly as often as other lesser filtration systems. This again means more stability for your pond. Also, if cleaning is needed you dont have to clean all the bio media at the same time. You can do it in stages which means less disturbance for your Koi. Its also a very easy media to clean - the once or twice a year that may be required is not nearly as much work as unclogging a sub standard bio filter, killing off all the bio film in the process. It is true that the equipment is not cheap. But it does represent outstanding value for money in that the products have been designed to last for years to come, delivering the benefits as described above and more over this substantial period. Value your Koi collection today, and then in one years time and once more in five years time when the Koi are starting to get really big and beautiful. Monetary values aside (20 good Koi at R600 each when theyre small can equal 20 Koi at R2000 each after just two years), the loss of any Koi is an emotional one not to mention a financially draining one that can easily dwarf the initial investment in the equipment. And thats the point. These products will deliver Happy Koi over the next twenty or thirty years, with less maintenance and reduced water costs. It has to result in a contended, satisfied owner.
