Hi!
Love your Gazette! I am a fairly new pond owner, having bought a house in September 2003 with a pond. The previous owner had added 6 tiny "feeder" goldfish in August 2003 and I now have 3 rather large goldfish, about 18 cm each.
A blue heron had a lunch of three of them one winter morning .... I now have netting covering the pond, however, the local raccoons seem to REALLY want to get in the pond. Constant adjusting and fixing of the net is in order every few mornings!
Thank you again for all the great information you have on your website and in this gazette! Here is a spring (April) pic of my pond. I live in Courtenay, BC, central Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada.
The pond is about 125 cm x 250 cm, about 60 cm deep. I have a waterfall and an electric underwater filtering system and pump which also feeds the waterfall.
The Marsh Marigold is now a lot smaller than in the pic. I had to cut it back, seemed to take over! I now also have some floating salvinia and pistia stratiotes that are thriving!
This winter we had a lot of snow and the pond froze over, lowest temperature lasting about 5 days was -10 celsius. The fish were fine and the marsh marigold came back beautifully!
