Using a Venturi for adding oxygen to a pond. Here's a great little article from John
Hi Tony,
John Schwartz here from the hills of West Virginia USA.
You put a picture of my pond in your last book.My pond is ready for another cold winter. Fall here in the hills is beautiful. The trees on the hill side are a mix of yellow red and brown. The leaves are starting to fall. The wood stove is a cooking and my log cabin is toastie warm in side. I can't begin to imagine what it's like in South Africa.
I found an interesting device to put air bubbles in my pond. I have to thank you for the understanding of how important air in the water is to a pond!
I have a hot tub (spa), to make the water presser at least seem harder you turn a valve. This mixes air with the water coming out of the water jets. Mine was not working correctly, it was a good company and they sent me another jet.
The jet was plastic about 3" long, a water pump with 3/4" tubing connected to it and the jet shoots out water. Nothing new so far. But the jet in the center of it has a 1/4" nipple that an other tube hooks up too. This 1/4" tube goes above the water line and has a on/off valve. When opened air is sucked down to the jet and air mixes with the pumped water and water and air bubbles shout out.
I used the old jet after I fixed my hot tub and tried this logic on my pond. I took a 500 gph 50 watt pond pump, connected the pump to just 3" of 3/4 tube right to the jet, add on the 1/4" tube long enough to reach out of the water and hooked it up.
My Goodness Tony the bubble that shoot out is unbelievable. Far more the any aquarium air pump I have ever seen.
The bubbles are strong enough to keep an opening in the ice. I even looped the opening of the air tube down, it's opening is protected from rain and deep snow. If the pond opening does ice up, fresh air will be sucked down the tube in to the water.
I will have a fountain running also at another spot. If the electricity goes out the tubing lines will freeze and that's all ways a problem in this modern world!
Just thought I'd share.
Johnnie

A pleasure to hear from you again.
The item you are talking about is called a VENTURI in general terms. It works by making water flow through a constricted passage (that's why there is a valve to adjust this passage on your device) .... at this exact point water pressure drops (because velocity increases dramatically in order to get through this very small opening) enough that atmospheric pressure forces the air into the tube down into the water and the air is then discharged with the water.
Thanks for reminding me and I will publish your email if you agree.
I really appreciate your feedback and experience
Do you find the Venturi noisy?
Best regards
Tony
